A Bondman of Jesus

Paul a servant of Jesus Christ . . . ~ Romans 1:1

Bondman? Huh? Is that like James Bond?

Sorry. No.

Speaking in this context a bondman is a slave. “In our Father’s Law, we see the parallel of going from the captivity of the ways of the world and the death and destruction thereof, to life eternal as a bondman of Jesus the Christ” (referenced from The Law of Slaves).

Baxter uses today’s devotion to tell us about Paul – who willingly lowered himself to be a slave to the Lord. In doing so, he gave everything. Nothing was his – not even his identity.

So many are quick to remember that Paul was an Apostle – yet they neglect the fact that Paul was a bondman first. As Baxter suggests, so many of us desire the opposite; to be Apostles first. Yet, we fail to be as such because we are unwilling to lower ourselves to be bondsmen to Christ.

Today, my prayer for you and I is that we will learn to be more submissive – to release our selfishness and allow God’s will to take precedence in our lives.
